With continued rain in West Central Missouri the crops are slow growing and vary greatly in color. With the extremely wet planting season we have corn that ranges from V-8 to R-3, which will make it an interesting harvest! With the river running through our area there are numerous acres under water and we have reported a few prevent plant claims, it seems everyone pushed to meet the late plant date in the lower areas. We are still experiencing an abundance of moisture which is causing crops that were up to now be standing in water. This year farmers seem to be applying additional nitrogen to combat leaching.
The soybean crop in some cases looks very good, that is if you planted in a three day window of ideal planting conditions. For the most part, terrace channels have thin stands but on the tops there is a nice stand that has canopied over. Because of the lack of heat some are finding the weeds are outpacing the beans, which makes it a challenge to determine when to post.
The moisture is the main story of this season but there is also plenty of discussion and activity in fields right now around using fungicides on corn, applying rescue treatments of N and pest alerts on Japanese Beetles, webworms, etc…
